HMS Beagle is anchored among a chain of 13 remote islands called the Galapagos, some 1000 kilometres (600 miles) off the west coast of South America. Among the 74 people making up the crew is the 26-year-old naturalist, Charles Darwin, taken on at the start of the voyage four years earlier in 1831.
